We chat with ThreePines star Alfred Molina about the unique superpower of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, learning from his Indigenous co-stars, and more thoughts on his new PrimeVideo series:
Louise Penny's series of mystery novels are coming to life with Three Pines. Centering on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, the Prime Video show sees the Canadian investigator head to the titular small town to investigate the disappearance of a local Indigenous woman, only to stumble on to a series of murders with various connections to the local population.
I said, "Well, I think it's Armand Gamache." She literally grabbed me by the shoulders, and just got right in my face and said, "You must do it, you must do it." She was really quite adamant about it, and this is a person whose taste and opinion I respect, you know, so I said, "Well, I better go and check this out.
Alfred Molina: She actually said it in a way that kind of shut me up, because I was kind of waxing lyrical about the character, but, "Oh, just cut to the chase, granddad, what's his superpower?" That was basically what she said, and I kind of said, "Well, I think it's empathy," and she went, "Okay, got it," and then of course, we've moved on.
Alfred Molina: Well, I think it was, in the books, Louise talks a lot about how when he's listening, he kind of looks at people as rather kind of piercing. She talks about his brown eyes, and I've got brown eyes, and I suppose I kind of went "Oh, yeah." It's just a way of he looks, and he listens, and it's that kind of stillness that provokes and encourages people to talk, whether they're a victim or a suspect.
Alfred Molina: I think the biggest thing I learned certainly is that it's a mistake to think of the Indigenous community in any country, but particularly here, as some kind of monolithic block of people that all think the same and behave [the same]. The truth is, these communities are made up of individuals with all kinds of achievements, all kinds of problems, all kinds of anxieties and aspirations.
We were graced with a fantastic crew, so I think we really had the opportunity to create a family, of sorts, and we embraced it, we grabbed on to that idea with both hands, and we had a wonderful time. I think it's a mixture of mutual respect, and also a sense of fun, as well, because when you think about it, we're incredibly lucky to be able to make a living in this way.
