Sally Kipyego took third in a race where several top contenders didn’t play a factor.
After a hilly and windy 26.2 miles, Aliphine Tuliamuk prevailed in 2:27:23 to win today’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Molly Seidel, second in 2:27:31, and Sally Kipyego, third in 2:28:52, rounded out the team for this summer’s Games.
The early pace on the rolling course was conservative, and the lead pack was more than 20 strong at halfway in 1:14:38. But the three eventual top finishers were alone in front by 21 miles. Tuliamuk and Seidel ran together until the final mile, when Tuliamuk broke Seidel on the repeated ups and downs. Tuliamuk’s 7-second margin of victory is the closest in women’s Trials history.Tuliamuk entered as the 10th fastest qualifier. Today was Seidel’s debut marathon. She’s the first woman to make the team in her debut; Galen Rupp and George Young have done so on the men’s side.
Tuliamuk won $80,000 for today’s victory, while Seidel and Kipyego win $65,000 and $55,000, respectively.It will be the the Olympic debuts for both Tuliamuk and Seidel. The women’s Olympic marathon, being held in Sapporo, Japan, is scheduled for August 8, the day before the men’s race.
