At the time, the high-seas battles were on another level and audiences hadn't seen anything like it, making it the biggest cinematic spectacle at the time of the movie's release.
6 Top Gun: Maverick Arriving 36 years after the original movie, the 2022 release achieved the unthinkable, as Top Gun: Maverick is better than Top Gun. The sequel is a flawed masterpiece, as it might not even reveal who its actual villain is, but it manages to involve audiences on an emotional level that critics and general audiences wouldn't have thought was possible for a Top Gun movie.
