Five meerkats - Nkosi, Lula, Nya, Kgala and Ari - died at Philadelphia Zoo last week in a span of just 36 to 48 hours.

Five meerkats - Nkosi, Lula, Nya, Kgala and Ari - died at the zoo last week in a span of just 36 to 48 hours. Officials say they were poisoned, possibly linking the deaths to dye markers used to identify the nearly identical meerkats. Rachel Metz, Vice President of Animal Well-Being, says she is shocked, because they have used the Nyzanzol-D markers for over 20 years.An investigation is currently being conducted with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
