Andrew Abdullah said nothing as he was formally charged with second-degree murder and weapons charges.
Prosecutor Nicole Blumberg described the 25-year-old as a man with an extensive criminal history who fired a shot into the chest of Daniel Enriquez on Sunday after pacing back and forth in the last car of the Manhattan-bound train.
Outside court, a woman woh identified herself only as Abdullah's mother said,"You all talk about his criminal record. Talk about how many convictions. Talk about the convictions, okay? This is wrong, what they're doing." Earlier Tuesday morning, police officers descended on his girlfriend's apartment at 6 a.m., but the suspect was not there.
"This horrific crime should never have happened," Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news briefing Tuesday. Abdullah was convicted of second-degree attempted murder in 2017 as part of an 83-count federal indictment charging members of the Harlem street gangs Fast Money and Nine Block.Police say Abdullah killed Enriquez, a financial researcher employed by Goldman Sachs, without any provocation while the victim was on his way to brunch.
