Joe Saladino was known throughout Alvin both for his popular barbecue restaurant and for how he used the establishment to help those in need., who died Tuesday at age 85."One thing he always did is if first responders came to his restaurant in uniform, they always ate free. He was a well-loved man in the community.

Customers at the restaurant at 1400 E Texas 6 included Alvin native and Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.prompting comments from residents such as Joel Castro, who wrote,"Joe was a pillar in our community and gave so much back to our city."to serve clients including Southwest Airlines, NASA, Lockheed Martin Corp., Houston Methodist Hospital and Monsanto.

After serving in the military in Vietnam, Joe Saladino returned to Alvin, where making barbecue turned from a part-time passion to a career. “I still love what I do," Saladino said in a July 2020 Houston Chronicle article."I can’t stay as long as I used to, but I’m here every day." "He worked many long hours to make things happen," Horn said."I guess he learned through the school of hard knocks."
