Amazon’s spy thriller series Citadel cost more than $250 million for one season, but a new report reveals just how lackluster its viewership was.
Prime Video's Citadel season 1 cost more than $250 to produce, and a new report now sheds light on just how disappointing the show was in terms of its viewership. Executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind mega hits like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Citadel was positioned as Prime Video's next big hit.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, a new report from Bloomberg reveals that Prime Video's Citadel, despite being one of the most expensive TV shows ever made and with backing from the Russos, failed to make much of an impression on audiences. According to Nielson, the report says, the show didn't appear as one of the 10 most-watched streaming shows in the U.S. any week since it hit the service.
Why Citadel Disappointed Right out of the gate, Citadel didn't seem like it had the necessary qualities to become a massive hit for Prime Video. Reviews were mixed, at best, with the general sentiment being that the show doesn't seem deserving of its massive price tag. Although there was some praise directed at the show's non-stop barrage of action, Citadel seemed under baked and somewhat generic, ultimately failing to really separate itself from what's come before.
Even though Citadel's viewership figures would be strong for any other show, the success metric changes when a series costs $250 million. This big investment wasn't just into season 1, however, but a broader idea of kick-starting an interconnected web of Citadel spinoff shows aimed at different audiences around the world. Citadel: Diana, for example, an Italian spinoff, is set to premiere next year.
