New banners along Parsons Avenue highlight the area’s centuries-long history, iconic figures amid recent gentrification.

Once he learned that PAMA and McLymont were behind the banner, Woods said, “I felt very humbled that anybody would consider me as a representative of the very old and powerful values of the South Side.”

“And I think of as an art project to do the opposite of that, to pay attention to the history, to look at your neighbors, to see who are the artists in the neighborhood that are doing good work,” he said.Brouillette's selection criteria for artists was succinct but profound: they must live, work or in some way be involved in the South Side community.

As part of the “community partner” requisite of the grant, PAMA hosted two open meetings at The Reeb Center to allow South Side residents to pitch design ideas to the selected artists. After the meetings, McLymont, 54, knew she wanted to illustrate a “contemporary hero” in the South Side, someone she considers emblematic of the area's history as part of her own"loose commentary on the gentrification happening" there. So, she landed on a portrait of Woods — her longtime collaborator.
