Following a conversation that pitted the amount of parkland in Austin against housing affordability, council members voted against doubling park fees charged to residential developers. Instead, they opted to raise these fees by 10%. | AKMcGlinchy

Council members also voted to begin charging commercial developers — those that build office and retail space — park fees for the first time since the city began charging these fees in 1985.these parkland dedication fees

The city can also use bond money to buy land for a park. In 2018, Austin voters approved $149 million to be used on parks, including the purchase of new land. Mayor Pro Tem Alison Alter, who advocated for a 25% increase, said she was disappointed with the council’s eventual decision to institute a 10% raise.
