A new study has revealed that hundreds of people buried in a mass grave in northern Spain may have been victims of Europe’swar, which took place 5,000 years ago. The researchers analyzed the bones of 338 individuals and found that many of them had injuries caused by arrows and other weapons. The findings suggest that the conflict lasted for several months and involved large groups of fighters, challenging the previous assumption that early societies only engaged in small-scale raids.
The researchers also discovered 52 flint arrowheads at the same site, likely used as projectiles. Previous research had shown that 36 of these arrowheads had minor damage associated with hitting a target. The researchers argue that the high number of arrow injuries and the damaged arrowheads indicate that many of the individuals at the burial site were involved in a conflict that involved ranged weapons and large groups of combatants.
The reasons for the conflict are unknown, but the researchers speculate that cultural or economic factors, such as competition for resources or land or tension between different regional groups, may have triggered it. The study provides new insights into the nature and scale of violence in prehistoric Europe and shows that warfare was not exclusive to more complex societies.
