Andor director Toby Haynes breaks down the show's callback to Leia's torture scene. 'I said, 'Look, I’ve absolutely got a moment here I’m going to have to do for myself...''
Andor director, Toby Hanes, recently broke down episode 9's Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope reference. During the episode, Bix Caleen is interrogated by Imperial Security Supervisor Dedra Meero about any information regarding Luthen Rael and Cassian Andor . Bix initially resists the line of questioning. In response, Dedra gives Dr. Gorst permission to use a torture device to extract the necessary information.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with The Ringer, Haynes detailed Andor episode 9's direct callback to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The director admitted that series showrunner, Tony Gilroy, was hesitant to including any direct references of the original George Lucas films. However, since Gilroy was absent from set on the day, Haynes took the opportunity to recreate one of his favorite Star Wars shots.
Tony was always very nervous about doing any direct quotes from any of the films, but he wasn’t on set that day. [Laughs.] I sat next to Kathleen Kennedy on that day, and I said, “Look, I’ve absolutely got a moment here I’m going to have to do for myself. I don’t know if it’ll ever make the edit, but this is really calling back one of my favorite shots from A New Hope.” And she was like, “Go for it. We love that kind of stuff.
However, some references are rooted deep within Star Wars' vast lore. For every obvious cameo of a well-known character, to include Colonel Wullf Yularen or Saw Gerrera , there is mention of obscure in-universe details such as Tunqstoid steel, or Cassian's involvement in Imperial conflict on the planet Mimban, or the return of the famed blue milk. Andor's subtle use of these references allows for a new story that feels intrinsically connected to the Star Wars universe.
During Andor's production, Gilroy directed his cast and crew to avoid a traditional Star Wars style and not replicate any iconic shots from the original movies. Prior to the show's premiere, he informed audiences that there will be legacy characters included in the show but to not expect any Star Wars fan service whatsoever.
