Heaney is just the fourth left-handed pitcher in franchise history to permit three or fewer earned runs in 14-plus consecutive starts.
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Andrew Heaney works against the Baltimore Orioles during the third inning of a baseball game, Sunday, July 21, 2024, in Arlington, Texas.ARLINGTON — Bruce Bochy’s knees aren’t what they used to be after a decade of major league catching. He rarely works his way fromdugout toward the pitchers mound just to exchange pleasantries. It tends to result in, more often than not, the exchange of a baseball and an exchange of arms.
Realistically? Bochy might’ve tried to do the latter on Sunday when, in the fifth inning of the Rangers’ series finale, he used one of Texas’ four mound visits after starting pitcher Andrew Heaney allowed a two-out double to All-Star shortstop Gunnar Henderson on his 95th pitch in a three-run game.Bochy might’ve even succeeded if it weren’t for Heaney, who according to catcher Jonah Heim, “kept interrupting him.”“I kind of made it awkward,” Heaney said with a laugh.
“I feel like I’m in a spot where I can attack and just mix three pitches and dump in a curveball every once in a while,” Heaney said. “It feels like I’m pitching ... just pitching.” The Rangers will start a four-game series vs. the last-place Chicago White Sox — who’ve scored the fewest runs in the American League — on Monday. Right-handers Michael Lorenzen , Jon Gray and Nathan Eovaldi will begin the series; Max Scherzer,on Sunday, and right-hander Dane Dunning “looks ready” to return from his shoulder soreness-induced injured list stint too, according to Bochy.A four-game set vs. a slumping team is theoretically a grand opportunity.
“Every game is big for us,” said Heim, whose three-run home run off of Baltimore right-hander Dean Kremer in the fourth inning provided Texas with its offense. “We’re just going to take it one game at a time. We can’t control the last two days, so, out today, play a strong game, try and get the win.”, Texas Rangers reporter. Shawn covers the Texas Rangers and other Dallas-area sports for The News.
