The words had barely had a chance to bounce off a few satellites and onto people’s personal devices and computers when the first reports came in that two, three, five, 14 and then at least 19 children had been slaughtered in a small Texas town whose name is now the latest shooting hashtag. A disturbed person, the will to create hell on Earth and the means do so.

Instead, the day of the shooting, we expanded the online letters file with new ones, another town was added to the long list of names where innocent people died, thoughts and prayers were shared by our elected leaders, and everyone knew nothing would change.
