DETROIT — The Angels began a critical week by doing exactly what they needed to do, although not quite in the fashion they had planned.
Mickey Moniak drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the top of the 10th, shortly after his misplay in center field allowed the Tigers to send the game to extra innings. Left-hander Aaron Loup then stranded the Tigers’ automatic runner in the bottom of the inning to pick up the save. The Angels are four games out of a wild card spot, pending the outcome of the Toronto Blue Jays’ game later Tuesday against the Dodgers.They had a 6-2 lead when closer Carlos Estévez took the mound in the bottom of the ninth, with the bottom of the order due.Estévez then got a strikeout before giving up a bloop single. After a clean single and a strikeout, the Angels still had a three-run lead with two outs.
Spencer Torkelson then hit a drive to deep center field. Moniak, who was playing deep, drifted back and was under the ball, but he couldn’t make the basket catch. The ball bounced over the fence for a ground-run double, tying the score.Estévez then struck out Matt Vierling to preserve the tie, sending the game into extra innings.
