Unemployment remains above the pre-pandemic rate of 3.5 percent, as well as the U.S. rate of 3.5 percent. “Again, pretty phenomenal,” said Parker Harvey, principal economist for Workforce Solutions, a regional workforce development agency. “Bottom line, it is another extraordinarily large increase over the month.”The region’s July job growth marks the second-largest gain for the month of July since this data series began in 1990, Harvey noted. The largest July job gain came last year.

Employment in mining and logging, which is dominated by the oil and gas industry here, surged 20 percent over the past year — adding 11,600 jobs — as companies benefit from high commodity prices. Construction employment jumped 15 percent over the year, adding 31,000 jobs.
