Out of the blue, Apple has confirmed a whole new way to use your iPhone will be here this year.
So, why did Apple announce it right now? Because just hours after it did, the company released the second developer beta of iOS 15.4 and the update includes relevant details, as spotted by 9to5Mac which says: “today’s update has the frameworks that developers need to implement the new feature. The frameworks also reveal more details about how this feature will work for vendors.
“To enable Tap to Pay on an iPhone, users must register with the Apple Business Register and send details about their commerce to Apple. In addition to supporting regular credit and debit cards, the feature is also compatible with store cards and rewards passes.” It also mentions that Tap to Pay requires Background Tag Reading technology, which means it will only be on the iPhone XR/XS and later.
So, once selected partners like Stripe will have the feature this Spring, a wider rollout will be coming later in the year as app developers integrate the feature into their iOS apps. Apple Pay is certainly convenient but this capability will allow payments by other systems like Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Imagine that: paying with Google Pay on someone’s iPhone.
