Before his death last year, at a hundred and one, Ferlinghetti was filmed reading his poem “The World Is a Beautiful Place” in a back office at City Lights, the bookstore and publishing house he co-founded in San Francisco in 1953. Ferlinghetti’s slight, singsongy cadence gives the poem a playful saunter. He writes of life’s thrills and their inevitable interruption . Arcade Fire is also interested in how momentary and evanescent our lives are, and in what we can do before we die.
