Volvo CE preps electric conversion program for 20-ton wheel loaders, but hydrogen power is also around the corner.
Volvo Construction Equipment introduces EV conversion program for the diesel 20-ton L120 wheel loader in Europe, slated to be offered to some commercial customers later this year.
The construction equipment maker is also experimenting with hydrogen fuel cells for its heavy trucks, having been operating a hydrogen prototype at its test facility since 2022. But what about all the existing machinery that's not ready to be replaced with battery-electric models? Most construction equipment being produced today is still diesel powered, and these vehicles tend to have very long operating lifespans.Construction Equipment may have an answer and is launching an electric retrofit program for its 20-ton L120H wheel loader.
Volvo CE plans to offer the L120H Electric Conversion program to some of its European customers starting this year to measure interest in this retrofit approach, prior to offering it on a wider basis.But the company is also working on new battery-electric construction equipment including the EC230 Electric, a 23-ton battery electric excavator. In the longer term, Volvo CE plans to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its vehicles by 2040.

Volvo then went on to race the 850 Saloons to great success in the 1995 season. 850 T5-R’s were rare cars when new, only available in 1995, soon to be replaced by the 850R. The 850 T-5R’s were only available in 3 colours, Cream Yellow, Dark Olive Pearl and Black Stone. Only 440, 850 T-5R’s came to the UK (only 118 of them were saloons) and only 28 of them were Manuals in Cream Yellow. According to 'how many left' there are only 90 (of the original 440), 850 T-5R’s left (that’s number includes all saloons, estates, manuals, auto’s, all 3 colours, including imports) and over 60 of those are sorned, I assume as investments or in collections. Based on the above there may be less than 10 original UK, Cream Yellow, manual saloons left in existence. The T-5R was developed with the help of Porsche, its 2.3l, turbo charged, 5 cylinder engine developed 243bhp, it could dispatch 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds, and go on to a limited 152mph, rocket ship quick back in the mid 'nineties'!
