BUENOS AIRES—Thousands of Argentines rallied in the capital and soccer matches were canceled Friday in a show of support for Vice President Cristina Kirchner, a day after a manand pulled the trigger in what authorities said was a failed assassination attempt.

A 35-year-old Brazilian man residing in Argentina was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated homicide but hadn’t faced a judge by Friday afternoon. The weapon didn’t discharge and Mrs. Kirchner wasn’t hurt.
