Opinion contributor Matt Salmon: The teachers union is “a scourge on our society.” That’s what I said at a recent meeting of the Sun City Republican Club – and I stand by it.

On the topic of civility, I detest the divisive and partisan rhetoric that the AEA and its president, Joe Thomas, have leveled at Republican lawmakers over the years. And, on the topic of ethics, I believe that the way the AEA spends its funds raises serious questions about impropriety.But, more than anything, I called the teachers union “a scourge” because of its repeated failure to properly represent teachers.
That’s why I feel the need to respond to a page three headline from Arizona Republic columnist E.J. Montini accusing me of “attacking our teachers” when, in reality, I was doing the opposite. .
