Kirtland police were able to get the man to surrender after about 45 minutes of negotiation.

KIRTLAND, Ohio — Firefighters attempting to respond to a barn fire Tuesday morning ended up in a standoff with an armed man who blocked their path with his vehicle, police say.

The fire on the 10800 block of Tibbetts Road was reported at 11:43 a.m., according to a news release from police. When firefighters arrived, they were met by an 89-year-old armed man who was sitting in a car in a driveway, preventing them from reaching the barn. Police say they had received a call that the man was suicidal. When police approached the car, the man brandished a handgun, police say.

As officers tried to negotiate with the man, they learned there were adults and small children in a residence on the property. Police say they were able to secure the residence and no one was injured. The man surrendered to police after about 45 minutes of negotiations and was taken to University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center for treatment. Firefighters then were able to get to the barn and put out the fire.If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
