Good morning, and welcome to the U-T Arts & Culture Newsletter. I’m David L. Coddon, and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week. I know that the popularity of, and television ratings for, awards shows like the Oscars has been diminishing for years. Count me among those who can’t work up much enthusiasm for these usually overproduced self-congratulations-fests. But I’m still a sucker for the Academy Awards.
Fans know she does Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Coolidge, Shakira and many others with equal aplomb. So, yay! Grande is the musical guest and hopefully a participant in sketches on Saturday night’s new “SNL” episode. Josh Brolin is hosting. A bigger gig for Grande is coming up later this year, when she plays Glinda in the film adaptation of the Broadway smash “Wicked.” In case you missed the trailer during the Super Bowl telecast, here it is: Wicked - First Look.
