As Houston vies to host a World Cup game, the city's diverse soccer culture enters the spotlight

Courtesy of Jules Rice/Harris County Houston Sports AuthorityHouston soccer fans driving in front of PNC Stadium or along I-45 north of downtown lately may have noticed familiar faces staring down at them.

On a recent summer evening at Texas Tailgate, a sports bar adjacent to PNC Stadium, a vibrant group of fans gathered to watch the Dynamo play an away game in the U.S. Open Cup. English and Spanish mingled as people conversed excitedly over drinks. A man who was visiting Houston from London even wandered in and was quickly embraced by the crowd, given a Dynamo jersey and flag.

That was one of the first things NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman noticed while speaking with Dash supporters during her recent visit to Houston. That is completely intentional, said Dynamo President of Business Operations John Walker.
