Along with Tucson, the Sierra Vista-Douglas area also has struggled to reach pre-pandemic job levels. Most other parts of the state have recovered.
Mary Anne Kutz, a Tucson-area resident, has been self-employed since she was a sophomore in college. Her latest business, in advertising, closed down after she lost several clients.
The Tucson area has grown over time, anchored by the University of Arizona and helped by a strong manufacturing base around aerospace, tourism, better home affordability than the Phoenix area and other strengths. But vibrant job growth over the past two years hasn't followed. The specific culprit is the sluggish growth of government employment, as well as professional and business-services jobs in Tucson, said George Hammond, an economist at the University of Arizona. The latter sector includes a range of entities such as employment agencies, janitorial services and garbage-collection companies.
“Mexican visitors and shoppers are a big deal for southern Arizona,” he said. Tourist-related employment is “recovering but still not back to pre-pandemic levels.” “Southern Arizona has attracted notable company expansions from across the U.S. and internationally,” the Commerce Authority said."Tucson is a top mid-market poised for rapid growth, attracting top companies in high-value industries."
In terms of employment, “The that have recovered the quickest typically have more large employers,” said Travis Laird, senior regional vice president overseeing Arizona for employment consultancy Robert Half. Also, transportation connections are less developed. No airlines have direct nonstop flights to the East Coast from Tucson International Airport, which can discourage business travelers. The lack of a major east/west freeway across Tucson is another impediment, said Michael Guymon, president and CEO of the Tucson Metro Chamber.
“A diverse and welcoming community, Tucson offers an outstanding quality of life along with a low cost of doing business,” said the magazine, which focuses on site selection and economic development. “Tucson has one of the highest concentrations of startups of any U.S. city its size.” “I feel like in other states they pay a little more than in Arizona,” Gesimba said about the community-oriented jobs she’s seeking in public health.
“I figured getting another job would be hands-down easy,” he said. “But I have only had one interview so far, and they definitely were not offering me eight years of experience worth of pay.”
