Clean energy, powering union jobs? We may know more this week.
The United Auto Workers pointedly haven’t endorsed Biden.
And this week they could put his promises to the test if talks between them and major American car companies fail to yield a new contract when the old one expires at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. That could lead to a walkout by about 145,000 UAW workers at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis — which builds Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler cars for the U.S. market.and potentially complicate Biden’s relationship with a major union at a time when he’s relying on organized labor to help power his 2024 reelection campaign. It could also raise questions about his “win-win” scenario, his sales pitch for an incredibly ambitious push behind clean energy, which most Republicans oppose.
