Dear Amy: It was loud and disorganized, but my parents (first-generation Americans) worked hard and my four siblings and I all went to college and are successful and happy people. We are a very close, loving and loyal family.

Dear Amy: My ex-boyfriend, “Chet,” was my first boyfriend . Chet recently “unfollowed” me on Instagram – my main social media tool. We had an amicable ending, and it’s been about three years since we broke up. I have been working as an exotic dancer, so I am wondering if that is the reason he decided to unfriend me? This hurt, because he was so special in my life, even if we were now just online friends. I recently found out that his brother has cancer, and it makes me sad.

My parents love one another very much, but they tend to squabble and pick at one another, no matter where they are. In our household, this was just normal. We’d pick on each other, have arguments , and then forgive one another and move on. The holidays are coming up and my folks will be visiting us for Thanksgiving dinner, along with my husband’s parents . My husband characterizes my parents’ dynamic as “fighting,” and this makes him uncomfortable.
