A booster dose of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine significantly raised the level of neutralizing antibodies against the omicron variant, according to the drugmaker
A booster dose of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine significantly raised the level of neutralizing antibodies against the omicron variant, the drugmaker said on Thursday citing an Oxford University lab study, a finding that is largely in line with results from other vaccine makers like Moderna and Pfizer whose boosters also offered enhanced protection against the fast-spreading variant.
The drugmaker said that omicron neutralizing antibody levels were higher among people who received a booster shot compared to those who had recovered from a previous Covid-19 infection. According to the company, the trials showed that a third dose of the vaccine given at least six months after a second dose led to a six-fold increase in antibody levels.
The company is also conducting separate studies to examine the effectiveness of its so-called “next-generation Covid-19 vaccine” AZD2816 against omicron.Mene Pangalos, AstraZeneca’s biopharmaceuticals research head, noted that it was “important to look beyond antibodies to better understand how vaccines offer protection against Omicron. As we better understand Omicron, we believe we will find that T-cell response provides durable protection against severe disease and hospitalisations.
