ARLINGTON — Two Astros players, outfielder Yordan Alvarez and starter Framber Valdez, were named to the American League roster for this year’s All-Star Game in Seattle.
Valdez pitched in last year’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles and garnered the win for the American League. Alvarez did not participate in last year’s game due to a hand injury and is expected to miss this year’s, as well, as he is recovering from an oblique strain that landed him on the injured list June 9.
Valdez, 29, entered Sunday with a 2.49 ERA, lowest among qualified American League starters, and a 7-6 record. The lefthander, now the ace of the Astros’ rotation in his sixth major-league season, ranked third among AL pitchers with 12 quality starts.
