ANAHEIM, Calif. — Traffic seems constant and three-ball counts are becoming too frequent, but Lance McCullers Jr. is accomplishing a pitcher’s foremost objective. He’s issued 14 walks and 19 hits across the first 21 ⅔ innings of his second-half comeback.
“That’s a guy that, if he gets in trouble, he knows how to escape. That’s the same guy he’s always been,” catcher Martín Maldonado said. “He is closer than what he thinks.” The usage, velocity and command of McCullers’ sinker is perhaps the biggest hurdle he has left to clear. Seven of his first nine pitches on Tuesday were sinkers. Six of them didn’t reach 92 mph. McCullers averaged 93.3 mph with the pitch during his first three starts.
