Astros get some of everything in win over Mariners: pitching, hitting and defense

“I don't know if it was the best all-around game but it was a really fun game to watch these guys compete,” said Astros bench coach Joe Espada, who managed the game while Dusty Baker served his suspension. “Just because of how tough it was last night. Today there was an urgency for us to go out there and compete and win this game, and they did. And it starts with that horse on the mound.”
Verlander’s strikeout count was double the six hits he allowed through seven innings of one-run ball. He compiled seven strikeouts over his final three frames. After he got a strikeout to end the seventh inning, Verlander pounded his fist into his glove as he walked off the mound and, right before he reached the dugout, raised his hand toward the suite where his wife sat.
“I don’t go out hunting for strikeouts really ever. They just kind of happened,” he said. “It was nice to see some of the adjustments I made, I think, carried over into my stuff and was able to have a little bit more swing-and-miss stuff.” The length Verlander provided was especially welcome because Houston’s bullpen was heavily taxed from the two nights prior, when relievers were ejected in back-to-back games. Verlander’s 108 pitches were a season-high, an especially relevant milestone given how cautious he has been as he builds his strength back up following Tommy John surgery.“I think I have to look at this entire season as part of my rehab process,” Verlander said.
