At least 10 people were killed and 29 were missing after a boat carrying several migrants capsized in the South China Sea
near the Malaysian Coast on Wednesday, an incident that follows several similar boat accidents in the region as Rohingya refugees attempt to flee persecution and poor living conditions in South Asia.AFP via Getty ImagesThe incident occurred at 4.30 a.m.
Initially, authorities refused to reveal the identities of the people on the boat but a Malaysian Army spokespersonMigrant boat-related incidents have become increasingly common in the region, with many of them involving refugees from the Rohingya ethnic group. More than 700,000 Rohingya people weretheir homes in Myanmar in 2017 as the country’s military unleashed a campaign of violence against the minority Muslim ethnic group.
at least 396 starving refugees from a drifting boat that had been prevented from docking in Malaysia. At least 32 people died in the boat.
