Some 130 refugees were on a trawler when it capsized en route to Malaysia a popular destination because of its sizeable Rohingya diaspora
Rohingya refugees gather to mark the second anniversary of the exodus at the Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh on August 25, 2019.
Some 130 people were packed on the fishing trawler that was trying to get across the Bay of Bengal to Malaysia, said coast guard spokesman Hamidul Islam. Seventy of them had thus far been rescued. With few opportunities for jobs and education in the camps, thousands have attempted to reach other countries in Southeast Asia.
