AUBURN TOWNSHIP – Ariel Buyarski can’t legally drive alone on the streets of Ohio, but she’s a whiz when it comes to navigating back-country woods and mountainous terrain in an off-road race.
The AWRCS race on Memorial Day featured two classes: the SXS Pro for more experienced racers and the SXS Sportsman for amateur off-road enthusiasts. “I knew that I had a strong-built car underneath me, so if I kept my head in the right space, I knew I had a good chance of pulling it off.” This was Ariel’s second time competing in the Red Bull Mountain Scramble. A year ago, in her first year as an SXS racer, she was able to complete only two laps.“I was definitely more prepared this year because I had more races under my belt.”
Ariel said she started out riding a quad, or four-wheeler, when she was about 8 and did that for two years. Ariel said her mother, Diane, was more comfortable with her driving a side-by-side vehicle, which requires a co-pilot to sit next to the driver during a race. “When I hopped into my car for the first time, with no experience out practicing, I was almost able to keep up with my dad,” Ariel said. “Considering he’s been racing for four years and he’s pretty quick, it was kind of eye opening.
