Novelist Salmon Rushdie was reportedly stabbed before giving a speech in Chautauqua, New York.

Rushdie was set to speak at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York when he was attacked on stage and apparently stabbed.

Rushdie was scheduled to speak along with Henry Reese, the co-founder and president of City of Asylum at a theme week called More than Shelter: Redefining the American Home. An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.
