The law enforcement arm of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is investigating the suspicious death of a Hawaiian monk seal, an endangered species.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration rescued Malama, who was underweight at the time, just one year prior to her death. The law enforcement arm of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is investigating the suspicious death of a Hawaiian monk seal,. Recent developments suggest the seal was killed intentionally, the organization said in a news release.

On March 12, the Hawaii Marine Animal Response, a nonprofit organization, received a report that someone had found the body of a Hawaiian monk seal known as Malama at Ohiki-Lolo beach on Oahu. HMAR transported the carcass to NOAA for an autopsy. The organization determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma. After consulting with several experts, the government agency concluded the killing was most likely intentional.after it had determined she was underweight. The agency transferred her to the Marine Mammal Center, a nonprofit organization, to assist the pup in gaining weight before releasing her back into the wild.

“We are all deeply saddened to hear the news of the needless and senseless death of Malama on Oahu,” Dr. Sophie Whoriskey, a seal veterinarian at the Marine Mammal Center, told SFGATE. “Young female seals like Malama are most important for the species’ long-term recovery, making this case heartbreaking on many levels.”
