Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers Assemble Alpha #1!Most Marvel fans know that its main continuity takes place on Earth-616 - one version of Earth in a seemingly infinite multiverse. However, despite the widespread use of the term, it's only now that Avengers is giving a satisfying in-world explanation for why this name was chosen.
While there is disagreement about who coined the term, what's for sure is that Alan Moore and Alan Davis introduced it in the Marvel UK comic The Daredevils, and that it then entered Marvel's American line via Excalibur, in which Captain Britain was a central character.
Earth-616 Is the Final Battleground of the Devil While it has yet to be explicitly spelled out, this reveal - stemming from the biggest conflict in Avengers history - effectively explains the meaning behind 'Earth-616.' The real-life Book of Revelation details a vision of the rise of the Devil on Earth and the attendant apocalypse, which is exactly what's happening as Mephisto enacts his attack on all creation.
Earth-616's True Meaning Explained This concept is something of a headache given it deals with time travel, multiple dimensions, and a being who seemingly breaks the rules of both, but it's an incredibly compelling in-world explanation for why Marvel's main universe is seemingly associated with the Biblical Number of the Beast.
This is a heady, bizarre theory, but hopefully one Marvel continues to enshrine in its official lore beyond the references and hints it has made so far. If, however, Marvel would rather not take the final step in tying Earth-616 to real religious terminology, the Avengers' ultimate battle with Mephisto just gave fans the most satisfying explanation they're ever likely to get for what the term actually means.
