Ayala: LULAC must hold election officials accountable, including its own

In so many ways, the League of United Latin American Citizens has been a model for the promotion of democracy.LULAC was founded to advocate for Latino civic engagement and has fought hard for fair access to the ballot box. The membership organization has gone into courtrooms to fight injustice and remains a proponent of transparency.Over the weekend, Texas LULAC held its state convention on South Padre Island.

David Cruz, LULAC’s national communications director and spokesman for Texas LULAC, noted the criticisms. In particular, Cruz pointed to the King Ranch, founded by Richard King, a riverboat captain and Confederate, who amassed what’s considered the largest ranch in the country at 825,000 acres. The convention also gave members the opportunity to meet in person. In 2020, the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, the state convention was canceled. 2021’s convention had a small turnout.

While conventions of all kinds face logistics hurdles, criticism of LULAC’s internal elections have been longstanding at the state and national levels. The incumbent state director Rodolfo Rosales Jr. handed them out. They bore his name. He won re-election with 63 percent of the vote.
