News and notes as SDSU builds toward Saturday’s Fan Fest and scrimmage at Snapdragon Stadium
San Diego State coach Sean Lewis has the Aztecs pointed toward Saturday’s first scrimmage. But FAST also is an acronym — fun, accountable, smart and tough.If fast is 100 mph, then the Aztecs were barely breaking the speed limit in April. Lewis equated the offense’s progress to a car motoring along Interstate 15.
“ will be the first day in pads,” Lewis said. “There will be a period of practice where it will be live American football. We’ll get it on a little bit, but the first major volume of scrimmaging and true blocking and tackling will be Saturday at Fan Fest.”“How we tackle and make guys miss,” Lewis said.
So when coaches review practice performances without a tackle being made, Lewis said, “There’s a lot of conversation in the building, like … is he on the ground or not? Did you make him miss or did you not? “This is a whole process and it’s been thought out with the strength staff and some of the sports science people that we have,” said Lewis. “We’re looking to ramp and peak next week and finish with a good scrimmage the following Friday … Then we’ll taper back so we can be the freshest team to go compete on the 31st.”“It’s great having Ross and Myles back up front,” Lewis said. “We have to manage them.
