When asked about San Diego State quarterback's successful transition from safety, Falcons coach makes comparison to one of greatest players in sports history

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun raised it to an art form during Tuesday’s news conference when asked about San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden heading into Saturday’s Mountain West game at Falcon Stadium.

The longtime Falcons coach was asked, when seeing a player like Mayden make the transition from one side of the ball to the other and play the way he did, how impressive is that? “The Red Sox had a tremendous pitcher back in the teens. I’m not talking 20-teens. A guy that I think threw a shutout or two in the World Series and helped them win a couple World Series and all of the sudden he was a heck of a hitter. He’s hitting No. 3 in the lineup for the ‘27 Yankees and ended up hitting 714 home runs and his name’s Babe Ruth.

“They are night and day different from what we saw last year,” Calhoun said. “You look at the production they’re having offensively to score 31 points like they did the other night against Boise State. You just realize how capable they are on that side of the ball.”breakout game against Boise State — five catches for 117 yards and his first collegiate touchdown — had historical significance for the 6-foot-2 wide receiver from Pasadena.
