Barbie director Greta Gerwig discusses working with Mattel, incorporating generational views on Barbie into the movie, and her love of the doll:
Barbie takes a new approach to the story of the iconic Mattel toy. Barbie experiences a crisis that leads to her questioning her existence and the utopian Barbie Land she lives in. These questions get her kicked out of Barbie Land and thrust into the real world, where she and Ken go on a journey of self-discovery.
Screen Rant spoke with Greta Gerwig about her Barbie movie. She discussed her lifelong love of Barbie, which her mother did not share even after learning her daughter would be directing. Gerwig also explained how she incorporated different generational views of Barbie and collaborated with Mattel. My mom was surprised and a little horrified. [Laughs] She was like, "You're making a Barbie movie?" I was like, "Yes, be careful what you limit!" But I think what was so intriguing to me, and challenging, about this was how to think about this as both an adult and as a child. You are kind of coming at it from both directions and trying to hold both consciousnesses at the same time.
Because often with superheroes, either you're a hero or you're a villain, or you're bad or you're good. I'm like, "Well, what if she's complicated like everybody else?" I think it was embodying that generationally. And then, I guess the sort of generational part of it was just inherent in the story, because it was only ever going to be a mother-daughter story at its heart. Ruth Handler invented it for her daughter, so that felt like it was baked in.
