A woman was found dead in a running vehicle after a barrage of gunfire in a west Birmingham neighborhood. An officer discovered an adult female in the driver’s seat of a car. The window was shattered, and the woman had sustained gunshot wounds.
Shot Spotter alerted police to multiple rounds fired at 12:44 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of 24th Street Ensley. A West Precinct officer was patrolling nearby and arrived on the scene within minutes.
Sgt. Monica Law said the investigation is in its early stages and detectives are trying to determine what led to the deadly shooting.“Beyond the Violence: what can be done to address Birmingham’s rising homicide rate” The woman’s death is the city’s 141st homicide this year, tying the record high that was hit in 1991. Just 24 hours earlier, 12-year-old Audriana “Minnie” Pearson was killed in a drive-by shooting while she was asleep in her east Birmingham home.In all of Jefferson County there have been 189 homicides, including the 141 in Birmingham.
