BART train hits wayward pickup truck on tracks; operator hospitalized, 45 evacuated
OAKLAND — A BART train operator was hospitalized, a passenger was injured and 45 passengers were evacuated after a suspected DUI driver crashed his pickup truck onto tracks, where it was struck into a train late Monday, authorities said.
Police detained a 67-year-old Oakland man who was driving the truck and took him to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.The collision between the train and truck happened around 11:35 p.m. and shut down service between the Coliseum and Lake Merritt stations, according to BART spokesperson Jim Allison.
Authorities said the truck driver was going east on E. 8th Street near Park Way when the crash happened. Police said the driver lost control and went over a curb and over a retaining wall, before crashing through a fence and onto the tracks.The damage from the crash was repaired overnight, and trains were running through the stations normally early Tuesday, Allison said.This is a developing story.
