What’s on tap: San Francisco’s famed Trolley Dances, Malian star singer Oumou Sangaré, Oakland Ballet’s Day of the Dead dance, much more.
Two thirds of Mali consists of parched desert, but the landlocked West African nation about twice the size of France boasts a lushly creative music scene that has spread its influence around the world. And no figure has loomed larger over the past three decades than the regal Oumou Sangaré, a fearless singer from the Wassoulou region whose incantatory songs speak to the struggles and glories of women in Mali and the world at large.
More than a musical artist, she’s an international activist who’s worked widely with the United Nations. She’s also an entrepreneur who own an artist-centric hotel in Bamako, and an actress. Sought out as a collaborator by artists such as Herbie Hancock, Seal, Pink, India.Arie and Jeff Beck, Sangaré makes her first Bay Area appearance in more than a decade with a two-night stand at the Freight & Salvage, performing with her seven-piece band.
The event is part performance and part celebration, combining a dance choreographed by company artistic director Graham Lustig with food, live music, traditional Dia de los Muertos costumes and decorations, and more. Reportedly, Lustig had danced in Mexico City during his performing days and came away with a love and respect for Mexico’s arts and culture.
