The Bay Area and California posted sturdy job gains in March, but the hiring increase last month slowed greatly compared with February.
The Bay Area delivered another month of solid job gains as California’s unemployment rate dipped to its lowest point in more than two years.
“Growth was spread across a broad range of industries,” said Jeffrey Michael, executive director of University of the Pacific’s Stockton-based Center for Business and Policy Research. Nevertheless, the slowdown in hiring is a foreboding reminder that a COVID jobs deficit still afflicts the statewide economy. The Bay Area and California aren’t close to regaining all of the jobs they lost at the outset of the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020.
“Today’s report is more good news for California’s continued economic recovery, representing thousands of new opportunities for workers throughout the state,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. Still, with the most recent employment report, California and the Bay Area, including the region’s three main metro areas, all inched closer to recovering from the massive losses at the start of the shutdowns.
