When I bike around the valley by my house in San Rafael, there's a small, permanent street sign at the top of the hill that says 'Bay Area Ridge Trail.' It's accompanied by an arrow that directs people to park in the dirt pullouts at the top of Big Rock. From there, they can start hiking either a few miles north or make their way south all the way along the ridge trail to the Golden Gate Bridge, and even on into San Francisco.
At points, the route has to come down from the heights in order to connect to one another. The official trail route also goes across lower altitude sites, like the Golden Gate Bridge. Sayles says that some of the most popular sections are in Marin. That trailhead near my house, at Big Rock in Lucas Valley, is the start of a continuous Bay Area Ridge Trail section that extends all the way through the county, a heavily trafficked route.
