Drummer Kai Neukermans, a Tam High student, sat in for a song during the legendary rock band’s recent Bay Area show.

“It was surreal and I can’t believe it happened so quickly,” Neukermans said of the moment Friday the Oakland Arena. “It’s kind of mind-blowing that it’s gone viral and it’s spreading so fast and getting so much attention.”

Neukermans has been a drummer for 10 years. His main influences include Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins, Danny Carey of Tool, Jon Theodore of Queens of the Stone Age, Steven Perkins of Jane’s Addiction and, of course, Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam. The Mill Valley youth had actually just seen Pearl Jam play The Forum in Inglewood just days before. He said Vedder’s daughter Olivia –– whom he had met years before at Ohana Festival –– texted him that Cameron tested positive for COVID-19 and would miss the show in Oakland. There were some replacements lined up, including former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and Oakland musician Richard Stuverud, but she said it was worth a shot for him to submit a recording.

Homelessness Up in Bay Area, Down Slightly in San FranciscoHomelessness Up in Bay Area, Down Slightly in San FranciscoHomelessness increased nearly 9% in the San Francisco Bay Area over the last three years, despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent to keep people off the streets during the coronavirus pandemic. Preliminary numbers released Monday show that more than 35,000 people were counted earlier this year living in shelters or outdoors in a federally required survey. San Francisco appeared to be the one bright spot, seeing homelessness decline slightly. Alameda County reported a 22% increase in this year’s point-in-time survey while neighboring Contra Costa County saw a 35% jump. Housing advocates said the increases would have been higher without strong government aid.
