Bella Ramsey, star of HBO's The Last of Us, bluntly responds to the homophobic backlash the series has been receiving. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name, The Last of Us is an apocalyptic zombie television series developed for HBO, starring Ramsey as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with GQ, Ramsey addresses the homophobic backlash The Last of Us has received for depicting queer characters and relationships. Rather than giving a more neutral response, the actor firmly states she isn't going to be cowed by the negative responses. Read Ramsey's full quote below:
“I know people will think what they want to think. But they’re gonna have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that’s on you, and you’re missing out. It isn’t gonna make me afraid. I think that comes from a place of defiance.
Queer stories are pivotal to the Last of Us franchise, particularly in the original video game's sequel. While Ellie's sexuality is hinted at throughout the first game, the sequel confirms her to be lesbian and sees her dating fellow survivor Dina. Though there was some concern that the HBO television adaptation would erase or play-down Ellie's identity, The Last of Us co-creator and co-writer Craig Mazin confirmed that Ellie's sexuality will be properly portrayed in the series.
Though Ellie's queerness hasn't been explored much yet on The Last of Us, there have been some hints that the series will reveal more of her story in the future. There are several other queer characters and relationships throughout the Last of Us games, and if episode 3 is any indication, the series isn't backing down from telling queer stories just because of homophobic backlash.
