A new protest for closing schools in Bellevue recently sprung up outside Odle Middle School. Parents held signs that said, "no school closure," "keep Odle open," and "Odle serves our community."
Bellevue Chief of Schools, Aaron Miller, told the 100 or so parents and community members in attendance that more students are graduating than entering the Bellevue school system. The district’s data shows that middle school enrolment will fall by 2030 leading many parents to ask why the district wants to close a school by fall. Why not take more time to analyze the data and then close a school, if necessary, closer to 2030 when they anticipate fewer students?
“I’m really, really concerned about this vicious cycle the rush of the decision they’re making. As a parent we wanna solve the problem I know there’s some challenges with the pandemic do we really need to cut schools now?” said Chuyong Fu, another parent in the district.Right now, its data shows 66% of classrooms are being used across its five middle schools, but that number is expected to fall to around 50% by 2030.
