As one gray hour followed another on Friday, even before the rain began, it seemed almost possible to spot the signs that major atmospheric events were afoot.

Under gray clouds, Washington waited on Friday for the arrival of two atmospheric visitors: autumn and Ophelia — one a frequent and usually welcome friend, and the other a sort of intrusive stranger who was to be warily watched.By 8 p.m., an advance guard of raindrops here from the south and the sea had penetrated the zone bounded by the Capital Beltway to reach the heart of the metropolitan area.

By the criteria of astronomy, Ophelia would manifest its main strength not in the last hours of summer, but in the first hours of autumn. Ophelia was to be with us for most of the time Saturday after the equinox arrives at 2:50 a.m.But on Friday, as one gray hour followed another, even before the rain began, it seemed almost possible to spot the signs that major atmospheric events were afoot.

Tinged with autumn, the air — with its high temperature of only 75 degrees, making Friday the coolest day of the month so far — also enhanced the suggestion that rain loomed only a short distance beyond our view. Many signs of autumn, both cultural and atmospheric, had been appearing here in recent days, as might be expected with September’s waning. But on Friday, many signs seemed to come together, all carrying a similar message.
