The announcement follows months of controversy over UC Berkeley’s plans to displace homeless camps in People’s Park to make way for student housing.
BERKELEY — Following a protracted fight over the future of historic People’s Park, city officials on Wednesday announced plans to house dozens of homeless people living there, clear their encampments and make way for student housing.
With these new resources, the city and university say they now can offer housing to all of the park’s estimated 55 occupants. And, they say, the new plan fulfills UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ’s promise that construction on the student housing project wouldn’t start until officials could provide encampment residents housing and a new place to gather during the day.
